Graphic design can be found nearly everywhere you look these days, from magazines, t-shirts, billboards, commercials and even corporate branding. Unfortunately, what we don’t find is the credit for the designer. Who are these masked men and women; the artists of our time? They have so much influence over popular culture, yet we scarcely, or dare I say , never hear about these people. We often hear praise for the genius of Steve jobs or Bill Gates. Where would these men be without the ingenuity of the graphic designer who brought to light their vision? A graphic designer’s work is seen everywhere, yet he or she remain the unsung heroes of the fashion/ art world. For the purpose of this article I chose graphic designer Chow Hon Lam aka (Flying Mouse) to cover some of his work, and ask him a few questions to try to bring him out of the shadows….
Mr. Chow Hon Lam aka Flying Mouse , a tee-shirt designer from Malaysia. Chow sees tee-shirt as a medium through which stories are told, to be there in a surreal and witty fashion. Chow had completed his personal project called Flying Mouse 365, which is: create 1 design a day, 365 designs a year. He hopes his designs can bring some joy and smiles to the world. Chow has also designed and collaborated with some
clients like: Air Asia, Nike, Lotus F1, MARTELL VSOP, KLUE, and Dave Matthews Band…
Q. So Chow can you tell us when and how did you get into graphic design?
A. I didn’t have a chance to join any art school, I worked as a part-time final art artist in a small design house in the year of 1994, that was my first graphic design job.
Q. What does Graphic Design mean to you?
A. - Graphic design for me is about story telling, a successful graphic designer is a good story teller.
Q.Whats the hardest part about the industry?
A. The hardest part in this industry is how to promote your self, and make more people know about your art. A great designer without great exposure is nothing.
Q.What is something you wish other graphic designers would understand and use?
A. Idea + Execution. A good designer must have both of these 2 points together.
Q.Where do you draw your inspiration from?
A. Everything around can inspired me, an apple, a cup of tea, a bunny, or the weather. I believe everything has a story behind it, but it just can’t speak. I try to tell the story for it.
Q.What advice would you give an up and coming graphic designer?
A. Keep doing what you do, and get as much exposure as you can. Don’t just store the design in your computer, bring it out and show it to the world.
Q.Can you name us some companies that you’ve worked for?
A. Air Asia, Lotus F1, Nike, Threadless, Martell VSOP, Dave Matthew Band
